Brechfa Forest offers some of the most rewarding walking in West Wales - and yet it remains refreshingly uncrowded. Ancient oak and hazel woodland, rushing rivers, sweeping valley views and an abundance of wildlife make it a place where every walk feels like a proper adventure, whether you're out for half an hour or half a day.
With trails ranging from accessible riverside strolls to longer forest hikes, and almost 6,500 hectares to explore, there's always something new to discover. Add in the fact that the forest is largely free from grazing livestock - making it one of the best dog-walking destinations in Carmarthenshire - and it's easy to see why walkers return year after year.
Cambrian Cottages is just 20 minutes from the forest, making it a brilliant base for exploring the trails at your own pace.

Dog walking in Brechfa Forest
Brechfa is one of the most dog-friendly walking destinations in West Wales. With 18,000 acres of forest largely free from grazing livestock, dogs can roam with far more freedom than on much of the surrounding farmland and common land. Popular dog-walking routes include the Riverside Walk and the Forest Garden Walk from Abergorlech.
Dogs should be kept under control on shared MTB trails, and between 1 March and 31 July, they must be kept on a short lead on designated open access land to protect ground-nesting birds. Please always bag and bin waste throughout your walk.
