Brechfa Forest mountain biking

- a complete trail guide

Brechfa Forest is one of Wales's finest mountain biking destinations - and one of the best-kept secrets in UK cycling. With purpose-built trails ranging from gentle woodland rides to technically demanding black-grade singletrack, it attracts riders of all abilities, from families on their first off-road adventure to experienced riders chasing the next challenge.

Managed by Natural Resources Wales, the trails are well-maintained and set within 6,500 hectares of stunning Carmarthenshire countryside. And unlike some busier trail centres, Brechfa still has a genuine sense of escape - you're as likely to spot a Red Kite overhead as another rider on the trail.

Cambrian Cottages is just 20 minutes from the forest - perfectly placed for an early start on the trails.

The MTB trails

Gorlech trail (Red) - 19km

The flagship trail at Brechfa. Three major climbs are rewarded with flowing singletrack, swooping berms and jumps on the descents. A brilliant, well-rounded trail that keeps experienced riders coming back. Starts from the Gorlech car park near Abergorlech.

Derwen trail (Green) - 8.5km

A purpose-built family trail winding through beautiful oak woodland. Smooth and approachable, it's ideal for younger riders or those new to off-road cycling. Starts from the Byrgwm car park.

Raven trail (Black) - 18.5km

Brechfa's most demanding route, aimed squarely at experienced riders. Expect technical singletrack, jumps and tight berms throughout. Not one to underestimate - but enormously satisfying for those with the skills to handle it. Also starts from the Gorlech car park.

Byrgwm trails (Blue/Green) - Various distances

A collection of trails at the Byrgwm end of the forest offering a range of difficulties, from easy forest rides to more testing terrain. A good place to build confidence before stepping up to the red.

Please note: some trails are occasionally closed or diverted for maintenance, forestry operations or severe weather. Always follow on-site signage and check for current updates before you travel.

Hafod Trails

Slightly outside the forest boundary, Hafod Trails is a newer MTB centre with uplift facilities - well worth a visit if you want to maximise your descents. Check their website for current uplift days and booking.
