Brechfa Forest -
A complete visitors's guide
Brechfa Forest is an area of expansive, tranquil woodland in Carmarthenshire, West Wales, around 25 minutes north of Carmarthen.
Part of the magnificent Cambrian Mountains landscape, it's a place where you can genuinely escape - whether you're here to ride world-class mountain bike trails, hike to sweeping viewpoints, explore the riverside with children, or simply sit quietly among ancient trees. At 6,500 hectares, it's one of the largest forests in Wales and a destination that rewards every visit.
A Brief History of Brechfa Forest
Until the early Middle Ages, the land north of the River Cothi was heavily wooded, forming the Forest of Glyncothi - vital to the defence and independence of the Welsh principality of Deheubarth. Following the conquest of Wales by Edward I in 1283, Glyncothi became a Royal Forest, governed under the harsh Forest Law, which imposed severe punishments for offences against both the wildlife and the woodland itself. The forest's animals - including red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, wild boar, wolf, fox, hare and pine marten - were all protected under this law until its abolition in 1640, by which time most of the ancient oakwoods had been felled.
The forest played its part in the industrial revolution, and during the First World War, timber was taken to produce naphtha for use in explosives. That heavy wartime demand for timber led directly to the creation of the Forestry Commission and the replanting of state forests across Britain. Today, Brechfa Forest is managed by Natural Resources Wales for the benefit of people, wildlife and sustainable timber production.
